If you are looking for a great hike in North America this summer, look no further than here! We’ve listed the best places to hike as well as the must-have gear to make your trip fun, comfortable and safe.

Grand Canyon—Arizona, USA

The South Rim is by far the most popular hiking trail in the Grand Canyon, but you can find many others for all skill levels around the park. The Bright Angel Trail is also worth attention, as are challenging routes along the North Rim that are also less populated.

#1 Gear: Footwear

Having the appropriate footwear will make or break a hike, as well as your feet, legs and back. For easier trails, try the Salomon X Ultra 3 Mid GTX for one of the best trail shoes around: lightweight, added ankle support and protection, and great toe protection, chassis and grip. For rough terrain and long hikes, sturdy hiking boots are a must, like the Salomon Quest 4D 3 GTX.

Canadian Rockies—BC and Alberta, Canada

Head north to Canada’s breathtaking Rocky Mountains for some awe-inspiring hikes. Try the Sunshine to Mt. Assiniboine trail that will take you up the “Canadian Matterhorn” (11,870 ft). Rest along Magog Lake and enjoy the wildlife you’ll see in the area, like elk, mountain goats and pikas, to name a few.

#2 Gear: Clothing

While hiking, it’s important to wear comfortable, cool clothing that wicks the sweat away and leaves you dry—and for that reason, avoid cotton! Always bring layers in case it gets cool, and remember to bring a hat to keep the sun off your head. For reviews and ideas on the best hiking clothes, check out this site.

La Barranca del Cobre—Chihuahua, Mexico

Also known as “Copper Canyon,” this expanse of rugged terrain in the Sierra Tarahumara region is four times larger than the Grand Canyon, covering more than 10,000 square miles and running 5,500 feet deep. The trails are essentially paths for natives to the land to get around, so we suggest hiring a guide or getting a well-detailed map.

#3 Gear: Backpack

Your pack is your life-saver. It will carry your extra layers, snacks, water, first aid kit, compass and map. You can’t leave for your hike without it! Invest in a lightweight pack with many compartments to keep your items separate. For the best of 2019, look to this list.

Yosemite—California, USA

Yosemite National Park is full of some of America’s best hiking trails, including the intimidating 15-mile Half Dome hike that will take you to some of the world’s most breathtaking views. Look at these hikes for an unforgettable perusal around Yosemite.

#4 Gear: Compass and GPS

Especially for experienced hikers that like to go off-trail, an up-to-date compass or GPS is absolutely necessary. Suunto MC-2G is a highly popular choice among outdoor enthusiasts and is extremely reliable, while the Silva Ranger S is another great option but without the magnifying glass or clinometer of the Suunto.
